This Sweet and Sour Tofu recipe is the perfect Fakeaway to enjoy on the weekend. The tofu is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a delicious sweet and spicy sauce that completes this comfort meal. Serve with steamed rice.
- 3 tbsp. Vegetable oil
- 1 tbsp. minced garlic
- 1 tbsp. chilli flakes
- 250ml water
- 4 tbsp. tomato paste
- 2 tsp. Hot pepper sauce
- 2 tbsp. soy sauce
- 150g diced pineapple
- 2 tbsp. Maple syrup
- 450g Tofu (Cut into 2″ cubes)
- 3 tbsp. corn-starch
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 1 tsp. black pepper
- 1 tbsp. Chinese 5 spice
- 1 tbsp. Garlic & ginger paste
- 1/2 red onion chopped
- 2 spring onions chopped
- 1/2 red bell pepper chopped
- 1/2 Yellow bell pepper chopped
- 1/2 Orange bell pepper chopped
- 150g broccoli florets chopped
In a small saucepan add vegetable oil. On a high heat, minced garlic and cook down until soft. Add chill flakes a little water, tomato paste, hot sauce, soy sauce, white vinegar, and maple syrup, pineapples stir then turn the heat down and bring to a boil then simmer and set aside.
Pat dry tofu, then cut into cubes and add to a bowl and coat with cornstarch then toss around making sure tofu is fully coated. Season with salt, black pepper, Chinese 5 spice seasoning then mix together and set aside
In a non stick pan add some olive oil, and carefully add tofu pieces then pan fry for a few minutes on each side until golden brown. Add to a bowl and set aside.
In a large frying pan add sesame oil on a high heat, add minced ginger and garlic and caramelise for 5 minutes then add all your vegetables and cook down until soft. In the same pan add tofu then stir in the sweet and sour sauce, and simmer for 5 minutes.
